What happens in a child’s mind when a seed germinates

There is a moment, early in the year, that I always watch for. A child has tucked a seed into a little damp cotton by the window, then moved on to something else. For days, nothing. Then one morning a pale split opens the seed coat — and the child walking past stops short.

That small pause looks like nothing. It is, in fact, the brain getting to work.

Between 6 and 12, the child enters what Maria Montessori called the second plane: the age when seeing is no longer enough — they want to understand why. Cognitive science describes the same window differently: it is when hypothetical thinking and sustained attention take hold. Botany lands squarely in that window, and it is no accident that it works so well.

But beware a very simple trap: showing is not experimenting. When you reveal a result you already know, the child files away one more fact. When you let them ask a question no one yet has the answer to, something else lights up: they anticipate, they test, they revise. And it is that second path — not the memorised right answer — that builds a scientific mind.

The question can be tiny. Does a seed need light to germinate? A few seeds in the light, a few at the back of the cupboard. The child bets on what will happen — and that bet has a virtue research knows well: by committing, they make the gap between what they expected and what they observe far more striking, and therefore far more memorable. By drawing their plant a little each day, they return to the same idea at intervals — exactly what anchors learning over time. By comparing their two pots, they handle, without knowing it, the notion of a variable.

Question, hypothesis, observation, conclusion: this is not an imitation of science. It is its real structure, simply brought down to the child’s size and the plant’s pace — which imposes its slowness, and with it the attentive patience no worksheet can teach.

What matters, in the end, comes down to little: a clear question, a place to record what you suppose and what you see, and time you protect.
